The Montegrappa Sea Shepherd Victory of the Whale Limited Edition is a collaboration between Montegrappa and Sea Shepherd that marks a rare moment in history when natural justice prevailed.
Almost two hundred years ago to the day, the crew on-board Essex must have thought their luck was finally in when they spotted a pod of whales 1200 nautical miles west of Galapagos. In fact, after finding the area’s population of whales discovered hunting ground, known as the “offshore ground”, about 2500 nautical miles (4600 km) to the south and west. This was an immense distance from known shores for the whalers, and the crew had heard rumors that cannibals populated the many islands of the South Pacific. Not so for Captain Paul Watson- founder and frontman of the Sea Shepherd Conversation Society. Watson has launched countless missions to rescue whales from predatory hunting. Some call Sea Shepherd’s actions eco-piracy, but their leader remans convinced that direct action is the only option when national navies cannot-or will not-enforce conversation laws.
Victory of the Whale is handmade from mahogany, vivid Mazzucchelli celluloid, and vintage bronze. Pen design uses the sperm whale as the pocket clip motif above sculpted bronze representing a ranging sea. Elements are created from recovered material from the propeller of Sea Shepherd’s former flagship, the M/Y Steve Irwin. A top-tier fountain pen and rollerball are each made in limited editions of 200 pieces to mark the bicentenary of the Essex sinking, and the unsung whale that brought about her demise.
