Montblanc has always been committed to art, literature, and culture and this time, the brand has created the Montblanc Meisterstück Calligraphy Collection to pay tribute to the art and culture of writing by combining newly developed nibs and craftsmanship.
The Montblanc Meisterstück Calligraphy collection is a contemporary interpretation of the classic black and gold colors. Calligraphy is a visual art related to writing. This seemingly newfound art form actually has its roots in the distant past. Brush calligraphy dates to Ancient China and the Shang Dynasty, eventually moving throughout Asia and Ancient Greece. In fact the word itself stems from Greek: “beauty” (kallos) and “to write” (graphein). Its meaning is ‘’the art of beautiful writing’’.
The idea behind these pens is to bring out the rich history of the art of writing, and to embrace this through the calligraphy. Calligraphy is a form of art that has reached all parts of the world, and can have different meanings amongst different cultures. For example, in China, calligraphy is seen as more than just a form of art. It’s a form of self-expression, personality, and success.
A contemporary definition of calligraphic practice could be ‘’the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner’’.
Special Edition “Gold Leaf“
Montblanc’s Meisterstück Calligraphy Collection focuses on more flexible nibs that allow for expressive, calligraphic handwriting governed by the amount of pressure exerted on the nib. The development of these nibs are based on the successful Montblanc pens from the 1950’s and are hand-crafted from 18K solid gold by master craftsman who take part in the 35 steps required to make each. The end result allows for more elaborate and more expressive calligraphy, with vertical lines varying from 0.3mm to 1.6mm thick, depending on the pressure applied to the pen. The flexible nib is engraved with the “888” calligraphy symbol.
The Meisterstück Calligraphy Gold Leaf collection is wrapped in gold leaf giving each piece its very own character. The writing instruments, made of black translucent lacquer are embellished with real gold leaf, applied by hand and feature a full black PVD clip and three full black PVD rings embossed with the Montblanc brand name. The edition is topped with Montblanc iconic emblem and the fountain pen uses piston filling mechanism.
The Calligraphy Gold Leaf writing instruments are available in Fountain Pen/119700 (with flexible golden Expression Nib), Fountain Pen Le Grand/119688 (with standard Meisterstück 18K ruthenium-coated nib)and Rollerball Le Grand/119689.
The collection also features three different Notebooks in black leather with gold or silver foil, as well as a red colored metallic foil. The paper inside each notebook is made by Awagami, a manufacturer that has been making paper since 1825 for some of the world’s leading artists, photographers, designers, bookbinders and conservators. Each notebook tells the historical evolution of calligraphy in three chapters: Western, Islamic and East Asian. The notebook features a writing exercise at the end of each chapter.
In addition pens and notebooks, Montblanc has also launched an innovative Ink series – the Montblanc Elixir Calligraphy ink is a perfect match for the new line of ink pens. The new ink is inspired by the first writing ink in history: Indian Ink, a permanent opaque ink also known as “Ence de Chine”. The inks in this collection are available in three different colours using natural plant and mineral dyes.
