MONTBLANC Hommage à Max Reinhardt

Since 2002 Montblanc has been sole sponsor of the Young Directors Project, an innovative theatre contest, which has now become integral part of the Salzburg Festival. The project offers young international directors the exclusive opportunity to present themselves to an international audience and has developed into an important launch pad for great theatre careers.

In addition to the sponsorship of the Young Directors Project, Montblanc supports this project with the Montblanc Edition “Hommage à Max Reinhardt” every year, donating part of the sales revenue of the Max Reinhardt Limited Edition to the Young Directors Project. This made it possible to increase the number of productions, letting a fourth international theatre company participate. The special Edition has been exclusively designed for this project and pays tribute to the great visionary of theatre and co-founder of the Salzburg Festival Max Reinhardt.

Max Reinhardt, original name Max Goldmann (1873-1943), was an Austrian-born theatre and film director, intendant, and theatrical producer. He is one of the first theatrical directors to achieve widespread recognition as a major creative artist, working in Berlin, Salzburg, New York City, and Hollywood.

In 1920, he established the Salzburg Festival with the performance of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s Jedermann. After the “Anschluss”- (“Union”, annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany in 1938), he worked in the USA , where he directed, in particular, the film version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

Like Edward Gordon Craig, Reinhardt gravitated toward neo-romanticism and symbolism. He entered the history of stage art as an innovator of theatrical technology: among his favorite techniques are a rotating stage, moving the proscenium to the auditorium, and abandoning the ramp that separates the actors and the audience.

Limited Edition 20

Inspired by the patterns of the playful rococo stucco work at Schloss Leopoldskron – a rococo palace, the birthplace of the Salzburg Festivals – the Max Reinhardt Limited Edition 20 is covered with an elaborate filigree inlay of Au750 white gold and precious translucent greyish lacquer, which reflects the splendour of the theatre performances staged at the place.

The 18K rhodium-plated gold nib features the Hohensalzburg fortress, as a symbol of the city of Salzburg. The cone is adorned with fine engravings. The cap is topped with the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl.

Limited to just 20 pieces, the Montblanc Hommage à Max Reinhardt was available exclusively during the Salzburg Festival Season (25 July until 30 August 2009) and only from the Montblanc Boutique in Salzburg, where interested clients could place their personal order.
