Ancient Greek doctors would have their patients eat seeds from a poppy to relieve pain. Poppies were also a sign of fertility and abundance in Ancient Greek. Poppy seeds were thought to bring health and strength, so Greek athletes were given mixtures of poppy seeds, honey, and wine.
