The Italian Renaissance was one of the most important events in the development of Western civilization. It was during the Renaissance that architecture became an art, through spectacular buildings such as the Duomo of Florence. It is this architecture that inspired the design of the Medici Limited Edition.

The Florence Duomo, also known as Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral is located in Duomo Square. With its famous dome the Cathedral is a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. The harmony and strength of its proportions mark a decisive break with medieval thought. Its construction begun at the end of the 13th century under the design of Arnolfo di Cambio (a famous architect and sculptor who loved the Gothic style) and structurally completed by 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.

The creations in the “Medici” Limited Edition are inspired directly – and with astonishing fidelity – by the exterior decoration of the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore. The colorful and bright marble of the façade of the Church is depicted in geometric shape and is replicated in the Edition in pearl lacquer and dark green.

“Medici” Limited Edition

The “Medici” Limited Edition has a force for design with assertive, forceful lines. The guilloche cornices adorning the Lighters and Desk Clock give them stature and nobility.

S.T. Dupont reinterprets the polychrome marblework on the facades of the edifice, where the skillful interplay of dark green and veined white lacquer creates a marquetry inlay effect. The red jasper refer to the color of the tile used for the dome, still found throughout Tuscany. The guilloche cornices (lighters and desk clock) and the personalized clips adorning the pens are ultra-sophisticated. The Medici Edition demonstrates the scope and precision of Dupont’s expertise in the goldsmith’s art, such as the careful lacquer inlays and the guilloché work done in the palladium-plated body of the Olympio Pens.

On a smaller scale, S.T. Dupont has succeeded in rediscovering perspective, which heralded the modern era and the triumph of reason and light over the “Dark Ages”.

S.T. Dupont decided to name this edition for the Medici family, great patrons of the arts in Florence throughout the 15th century. The product numbering refers to the date 1420, when this magnificent construction of the cathedral began.
