Throughout history, great artists have given voice to the human experience through a shared language of form, harmony, and beauty. The Montblanc Masters of Art Collection pays tribute to these timeless creators and their pursuit of artistic excellence, a pursuit that Montblanc both honors and continues to engage with. In recognition of his groundbreaking contribution and lasting influence, Montblanc has created the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition as a tribute to his legacy.
Henri Matisse is regarded as one of the defining figures of 20th century art. His innovative use of artistic mediums helped shape the foundations of modern art. Henri Matisse was a French artist best known for his powerful use of color and his expressive, original drawing style. Along with Pablo Picasso, Matisse is considered one of the key figures who shaped modern art in the early 20th century. His work played an important role in the major changes that took place in both painting and sculpture during that period. Over a career that lasted more than 50 years, he developed a highly expressive visual language built around color and line, which earned him a lasting place as one of the leading artists of modern art.
Limited Edition 4810 Fountain pen and Rollerball pen
Inspired by Henri Matisse’s vivid approach to colour, this edition combines blue and white lacquer with platinum-coated fittings, echoing the spirit of his celebrated work Blue Nude III. What initially appears as an abstract composition of blue and white reveals the outline of a female figure when the writing instrument is turned. The cap features a generously rounded, almost sculptural form, referencing the bold curves found in many of Matisse’s sculptures and reflecting his ability to blend different artistic techniques and modes of expression. The cap top is finished with blue precious resin surrounding the Montblanc emblem in white precious resin, while the platinum-coated cone is decorated with a botanical-inspired motif. The handcrafted, rhodium-coated solid Au 750 gold nib unites nature and art, engraved with two botanical elements reminiscent of The Sheaf, while the interwoven initials “H” and “m” pay tribute to the pioneering spirit of the Modernist era. The uniquely organic shape of the white lacquered clip draws inspiration from the layered, leaf-like forms seen in Matisse’s cut-out work The Sheaf.
Limited Edition 888 Fountain pen
Growing up in Bohain in northern France, then a prosperous center of the textile industry, Henri Matisse developed an early fascination with fabrics. He later transformed his studio into a rich environment filled with textiles and decorative materials. At first, he used fabrics mainly as background elements in his compositions, but over time they became central to his artistic exploration, shaping his focus on ornamental patterns and balanced color harmony. This influence is clearly reflected in his iconic painting La Blouse Roumaine, which serves as the primary inspiration for the Limited Edition 888.
The structure of the cap and upper barrel is inspired by the texture of a painted canvas, while the slightly glossy red and blue lacquer reflects the key colors of the artwork. Decorative details on the barrel and cone reference the traditional embroidered blouse depicted in the painting. Beyond his vivid paintings and sculptures, Matisse’s pencil drawings played a crucial role in his creative process. They allowed him to explore form directly, capture emotion in its purest state, and refine the expressive line that defines his visual language. One such example is his late drawing Large Face (Mask) from 1952, an image of which is engraved on the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib. The cap’s generously rounded, sculptural form reflects the flowing curves found in many of Matisse’s sculptural works, highlighting his ability to combine different artistic techniques and forms of expression. Black onyx is used both at the base of the cone and around the mother-of-pearl Montblanc emblem on the cap top, which is framed by a solid Au 750 gold ring. Finally, the organic shape of the black lacquered clip draws inspiration from the layered, leaf-like forms found in Matisse’s cut-out work The Sheaf.
Limited Edition 161 Fountain pen
This edition is inspired by Henri Matisse’s transformative journey to Tahiti in 1930, a period that marked the beginning of a new creative phase in his artistic career. The fountain pen pays tribute to his work Window in Tahiti, capturing the lasting influence the island had on his visual imagination.
During his stay in Tahiti, Matisse immersed himself in the surrounding natural environment, creating drawings and taking photographs that later informed his artistic compositions. The cap, made of partly blackened Ag 925 sterling silver, features a finely crafted 3D engraving that brings elements from Window in Tahiti to life, including the trees and boat he observed from his hotel room in Papeete. The barrel, crafted from cocobolo wood, is engraved and finished with translucent lacquer, displaying a geometric pattern inspired by a traditional ceremonial tapa cloth similar to the one Matisse brought back from Tahiti. The cap top, made of solid Au 750 rose gold, is set with the Montblanc emblem in paua shell, known for its iridescent colors that echo the beauty of the ocean. The hand-crafted solid Au 750 rose gold nib, partly rhodium-coated, is embossed with the Greek letter Phi, symbolizing the golden ratio, which inspired the limited production of just 161 pieces. Decorative details referencing Polynesia, the Sky appear on the nib, while the rose gold-coated clip and engravings on the cone reflect the organic forms found in Matisse’s cut-out work The Sheaf.
Limited Edition 96 Fountain pen
This edition pays tribute to Henri Matisse’s revolutionary exploration of color and form, most vividly seen in his masterpiece The Dance II (1910). With its flowing lines and radiant areas of color, the work captures a sense of rhythm and movement, reflecting Matisse’s belief in reducing forms to pure color and simplified shapes to achieve expressive power. The design of this limited edition reflects that artistic philosophy. The cap and barrel are finished with carefully applied vivid blue and turquoise lacquer, decorated with bronze figures of dancers that wrap around the writing instrument in a continuous, choreographed movement inspired directly by The Dance II. Fine engravings further emphasize the fluidity of their forms. The cap top features the Montblanc emblem in turquoise stone, framed in solid Au 750 gold and set against red jasper, a material that also appears at the base of the cone. The overall proportions of the pen are guided by the principle of the golden ratio, expressing balance and visual harmony. The cap’s softly rounded, sculptural shape pays homage to Matisse’s diverse sculptural works. Inspired by Matisse’s late cut-outs, the forepart includes engraved detailing, while the rose gold-coated clip features an unconventional, organic design. The handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib unites natural and artistic motifs, engraved with two botanical elements referencing The Sheaf, and the interwoven initials “H” and “m” honoring the artist of the Modernist era. The cone’s decorative pattern continues the botanical theme, using elliptical, petal-like forms that reflect Matisse’s constant inspiration from nature’s colors and shapes. This edition is limited to 96 pieces, referencing the year 1896, a pivotal moment in Matisse’s early career when several of his works were exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts.
Limited Edition 8 Fountain pen
Matisse’s work is defined by his bold and expressive use of color, focusing on pure tones and simplified forms to create strong emotional impact. He believed art should return to its essential elements, restoring clarity and expressive power. This idea is reflected in his 1937 painting Purple Robe and Anemones, which inspires this limited edition. The painting shows a richly dressed female figure surrounded by abstract patterns and a dominant floral arrangement, blurring the line between figure and background. The design reinterprets these elements through materials and detail. The cap and barrel in Au 750 white gold are decorated with handcrafted enamel and motifs inspired by the painting’s patterns. Laser engravings on the lower barrel and cone echo ornamental forms from Matisse’s floral compositions. Color symbolism is expressed through materials: green jade at the cone base and red carnelian on the cap, topped with the Montblanc emblem in pavé diamonds set in gold. Cognac-colored diamonds wrap around the cap and barrel. The pen’s proportions follow the golden ratio, while its rounded sculptural shape references Matisse’s sculptural works. Influences from his cut-out technique appear in the clip and engravings, and the nib-crafted in Au 750 gold with a diamond, features a motif inspired by his drawing Large Face (Mask).
