Many design details of Writers Edition Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson limited edition are inspired by his novel “Treasure Island”. The design of this writing instrument is inspired by the historic, extendable spyglass, with the shape and the rings at the end reflecting that nautical theme. The black barrel features engraved crosses, including a bold “X” that echoes the iconic treasure mark from old maps. The cap is decorated with vertical lines reminiscent of wooden ship planks, such as those on the schooner Hispaniola, or a classic sea chest. Just behind the platinum-coated clip, the lines come together in a compass rose, while the clip itself resembles a belaying pin used to tie down a ship’s ropes. At the top of the cap, the Montblanc emblem is enhanced with a raised skull and crossbones — a nod to pirate lore. The cap ring features an engraving of Robert Louis Stevenson’s signature along with the year 1866, marking the publication of his first work, The Pentland Rising. His birth and death years, 1850 to 1894, are also inscribed on the cap as a tribute to his life. Reflecting Stevenson’s love for the sea and his later life in the South Pacific, the nib—crafted from solid Au 750 gold and coated in rhodium—bears delicate wave engravings. It also includes the title “Tusitala,” meaning “teller of tales,” a name given to him by the Samoan people in honor of his storytelling and adventurous spirit.

The shape of the instrument and the rings near the tip are designed to resemble a classic extendable spyglass, evoking the spirit of maritime exploration. Inspired by his well-known Treasure Island novel, the barrel features a depiction of the legendary ship Hispaniola, set into rich black lacquer. As part of the storytelling design, a small window shows the ship flying the British Ensign, which can be turned with a small knob to reveal a pirate flag—symbolizing the mutiny at the heart of the tale. The cap, coated in Montblanc’s distinctive signature gold tone, is decorated with vertical grooves that echo the wooden planks of both the Hispaniola and a traditional sailor’s chest. Just behind the clip, the lines form a compass rose, and the clip itself mimics a belaying pin, used to fasten a ship’s rigging. The top of the cap is finished with a Mother-of-Pearl Montblanc emblem. Around the cap ring Robert Louis Stevenson’s signature is engraved. In tribute to his lifelong love of the sea and his time spent living in the South Pacific, the handcrafted Au 750 solid gold nib features delicate engravings of clouds, seagulls, and the title “Tusitala”—meaning “teller of tales,” the name given to him by the Samoan people. The use of signature gold or its coating reflects Montblanc’s refined shade of yellow gold, a tone that has become a hallmark of the brand’s writing instruments.

One of the most dangerous and famous characters from Treasure Island, Long John Silver, is shown on the cap as a small hand-engraved figure filled with colored lacquer. His parrot, Captain Flint, is also included in the design, shown in a similar style with a soft color effect. Around the top of the cap is a line from the poem Stevenson wrote for his own grave: “UNDER THE WIDE AND STARRY SKY.” The letters are engraved backward, symbolizing the theme of opposites, just like in Stevenson’s story The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The clip on the pen, covered in yellow-gold color, is shaped like a belaying pin — a tool used to tie ship ropes. Behind the clip and on the barrel, there is a compass rose design, placed in a yellow gold grid. Stevenson’s own drawing of the treasure map, which plays a key role in Treasure Island, is engraved on the silver barrel. The gold nib features the word “Tusitala,” which means “teller of stories” — a name given to Stevenson by the people of Samoa — along with palm leaves, showing his deep connection to the island where he spent the final years of his life.
