The Greek Titan Atlas of the S.T. Dupont Haute Creation Collection was created in collaboration with 2Saints, a longtime S.T. Dupont partner.
During the summer holidays in 2019, the masters of S.T. Dupont, together with the ideological inspirer of the 2 Saints brand, re-read the myths of Ancient Greece, and got so carried away that they decided to write their own Odyssey about the Atlas.
In Greek Mythology, Atlas was a Titan who was responsible for bearing the weight of the heavens or sky on his shoulders for eternity, a punishment bestowed on him by Zeus. Atlas was given this task in retribution for him, leading the Titans into battle, or Titanomachy against the Olympian Gods for control of the heavens.
Atlas was the son of the Titans Iapetus and the Oceanid Asia (or Clymene) and brother of Prometheus (creator of humankind). Father of many stars and a protagonist in one of Hercules’ famous labours, Atlas was also known as a wise man and the founder of astronomy. For Plato, he was the eponymous first king of Atlantis, and this giant of a god also gave his name to a huge mountain range in Northern Africa, the great Atlantic Ocean and any large collection of maps.
Atlas and his brother Menoetius sided with the Titans against the Olympians and when the Titans were eventually defeated many of them were confined to Tartarus (a deep abyss used as a dungeon) including Atlas’s brother. However, Atlas had a different fate, and Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the Western edge of Gaia (the Earth) and hold the heavens on his shoulders to prevent the two (heaven and earth) from resuming their primordial embrace.
Atlas turned into a rocky mountain by the hero Perseus (the slayer of the Gorgon Medusa), who to punish Atlas for his inhospitality, showed him the Gorgon’s head, the sight of which turned men to stone.
Limited Edition Collection
The fate of the S.T. Dupont’s hero is exactly like the fate of the mythical Titan, whom Zeus ordered to keep the heavens on his shoulders as punishment for his rebellion. The S.T. Dupont Atlas also obediently holds up the celestial globe. Unlike the mythological one, the celestial globe on the shoulders of the hero of the “Atlas” Collection sometimes gets a little lighter – it opens, revealing a hollow space with a pen or a lighter inside.
Like many other flagship collections, the “Atlas” is offered at three levels: S.T. Dupont Atlas Prestige, S.T. Dupont Atlas Exclusive and S.T. Dupont Atlas Ultra Exclusive Collections.
The Atlas Prestige Line 2 made of bronze with rhodium finishes is limited to 288 pieces. On the front side is carved the Greek Titan “Atlas” and on the back side, “Gorgon” Medusa – a female monster in Greek mythology – the most famous of the three sisters of the Gorgons, a monster with a woman’s face and snakes instead of hair. Those who gazed into her eyes would turn to stone. Medusa was beheaded by the Greek hero Perseus.
The Exclusive version is also bronze and rhodium, though it’s a much larger and intricate design. It comes with a bronze base and is limited to 88 pieces.
