MONTBLANC Artisan / Christopher Columbus “Cristobal Colon”

Montblanc pays homage to Christopher Columbus, in Spanish, Cristóbal Colón (1451-1506) – master navigator, cartographer and admiral whose four transatlantic voyages (1492-93, 1493-96, 1498-1500, and 1502-04) opened the way for European exploration, exploitation, and colonization of the Americas. He has long been called the “discoverer” of the New World, although Vikings such as Leif Erikson had visited North America five centuries earlier. An Italian explorer discovered the ‘New World’ of the Americas on an expedition sponsored by King Ferdinand of Spain in 1492.

Christopher Columbus, who stumbled upon the Americas and whose journeys marked the beginning of centuries of transatlantic colonization, remains a prominent historical figure around the world and has been researched and written about for centuries.

One of Montblanc’s most impressive Limited Editions, the Toledo-style Fountain Pen was released predominantly to the European market in 2008, and very few examples were made available to collectors in the U.S. and other markets. The barrel and cap of the pen are embellished with “Toledo” technique, known in Spain in the 13th century, traditionally used in the decoration of weapons. The masters of Toledo that used to treat steel and brass, for the first time worked in 18K solid gold for the Limited Edition Cristobal Colon 92.

The Au750 solid yellow gold overlay is elaborately hand-engraved in the Toledo manner, with motifs suggestive of Columbus’s historic voyage of discovery to the New World. The Medium 18K gold nib is engraved with the portrait of Columbus. The Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl crowns the cap top of the Limited Edition “Cristobal Colon” Fountain Pen.

The Limitation number is a reference to the discovery of America in the year 1492.
