MONTBLANC Paul Klee

Inspired by one of Paul Klee’ works, Montblanc decided to pay homage to a renowned painter and graphic artist, one of the masters of the 20th century, who was influenced by expressionism, cubism and surrealism.

Paul Klee (1879-1940) born in Switzerland in a family of a German music teacher and a Swiss singer was considered both a German and a Swiss painter. In his early years, following his parents’ wishes, Klee focused on becoming a musician; but he decided on the visual arts during his teen years. Klee was able to develop his music skills as his parents encouraged and inspired him throughout his life. A gifted violinist, he briefly considered music as a career, and between 1903 and 1906 he played occasionally in the Bern Symphony Orchestra.

He turned to painting in 1898, when he began studying art in Munich, a city strongly influenced by post-impressionism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered colour theory, and wrote extensively about it; his lectures “Writings on Form and Design Theory, published in English as the “Paul Klee Notebooks”, are considered to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci’s “A Treatise on Painting” for the Renaissance. He and his colleague, the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the German Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality.

This 18K gold skeleton pen reflects five key elements of Paul Klee’s theory of art: nature, color, rhythm, movement and construction. The result is a colour composition in champagne gold, warm orange and cool blue tones, inspired by Klee’s famous watercolour “Separation in the Evening” (1922).

The cap top and cone are decorated with elements in the style of “pointillism”. The stylised arrows on clip and cap top are set with blue sapphires (0.33ct, triangle cut), while the Montblanc emblem is in mother-of-pearl. The Medium 18K two-tone gold nib is embellished with the arrow motif.
