The Montblanc Michelangelo Limited Edition 96 was created to honor Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) – an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet of the High Renaissance who developed his artistic work over more than seventy years between Florence and Rome, which was where his great patrons, the Medici family of Florence and the different Roman popes lived.
He was the first Western artist whose biography was published while he was alive: In fact, two biographies were published during his lifetime. He was much admired by his contemporaries, who called him the Divine.
With the talent and grace of a master, the detail and delicacy of a perfectionist, and the soul and emotion of an infinite spirit, Michelangelo Buonarroti became one of the greatest and most admired artists of all time. His numerous masterpieces display his sophisticated understanding of human existence, his unique interpretation of shape and form, and his phenomenal talent as a painter, sculptor and architect.
Living during the Renaissance, a time of political uneasiness, Michelangelo surpassed the criticisms and disruptions of his surroundings, remaining true to his beliefs and never compromising the extravagance of his artistry.
Michelangelo spent much of his time in solitude, dedicating his life and his work to God. He filled his existence with the art he loved to create. Through its magnificence, he expressed to the world his spirit, intellect and divine talent as a master artist. He was and is remembered as a genius of his time, and his art, as feats of miraculous accomplishment and beauty.
The Sculpture “David”
He sculpted the marble statue of Biblical figure “David” before the age of thirty. Definitely Michelangelo’s David is a masterpiece of the history of Florentine art and one of the most famous works in the history of mankind.
The story of the statue of David begins with a stone block brought to Florence by boat across the Mediterranean from the Fantiscritti quarry in Carrara, this block was stored for years waiting to be carved.
In the middle of the 15th century, the managers of the Opera del Duomo and the leaders of the union of the Knitters of Florence promoted an ambitious project that consisted of sculpting twelve figures to decorate the exterior of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore today known as the Duomo of Florence. In 1501, the Opera del Duomo of Florence officially commissioned this project to Michelangelo provoking an interest such that this genius isolated himself to make the sculpture. Michelangelo sculpted the David from 1501 until 1504, resulting in this icon of the Renaissance with a size and proportions of enormous dimensions. The David is just over 5 meters high and exceeds five tons. It is considered the apex of the sculptural work of Michelangelo.
Michelangelo created David as a symbol of heroic courage and inner spiritual strength. The tension of this young shepherd in front of his terrible enemy was represented by Michelangelo with details like an intense expression in his eyes, an accurate contraction of the muscles showing the veins in relief where it would seem that the blood ran. This sculpture became one of the first examples of Michelangelo’s intricate study of the human form and the most representative works of the Italian Renaissance.
There are three copies of Michelangelo’s David and the original sculpture of the David is in the Accademia Gallery of Florence (Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze).
