MONTBLANC Patron of Art / Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa / Artist of the Moulin Rouge

This Limited Edition Fountain Pen is an homage to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), a famous French painter and illustrator of the late 19th century, who is best known for the intense and awe-inspiring collection of posters designed for the Moulin Rouge Cabaret.

“Moulin Rouge” (Moulin Rouge, literally “Red Mill”) – a classic cabaret in Paris, built in 1889, one of the sights of the French capital. Located in the 18th municipality, on Boulevard de Clichy, in the red light district near Place Pigalle. The main attraction of Moulin Rouge was the famous “Can-can” dance. It brought together not only representatives of the middle class, but also aristocrats, people of art (Picasso, Oscar Wilde) and even members of royal families, for example, the Prince of Wales.

In 1882, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec arrived in Paris, and in 1884 he settled in Montmartre, where he lived until the end of his days. He was one of the first to take seriously the drawing of posters (lithography), where he created his famous collection of posters for the Moulin Rouge cabaret. His models were the dancers Louise Weber (La Gulyu) and Jeanne Avril, the clown Sha-U-Kao, the poet and theatrical figure Aristide Bruant, the dancer Valentin Beskostny and the singer Yvette Guilbert. Throughout his creative life, which lasted less than 20 years, Toulouse-Lautrec created 737 paintings, 275 watercolors, 363 prints and posters, 5084 drawings, several ceramics and stained glass windows.
