Montblanc’s Great Characters Edition pen collection tells the story of cultural icons who have made their mark on history, leaving behind a legacy worth celebrating.
In 2021, Montblanc pays tribute to Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988), a multi-faceted man whose name is synonymous with the eponymous Italian automobile company. He was also an esteemed racing driver, entrepreneur and the founder of the Scuderia Ferrari, the racing division of the luxury car company. Ferrari racing cars are more decorated than any other marque, having participated in every Formula One World Championship since the first season in 1950.
Montblanc and Ferrari collaborated on the project to help tell the story of this legendary man, who led his company to prestigious heights. The Enzo Ferrari pen collection comprises three variations. Two of the releases will be available in limited numbers, while all three are engraved with momentous dates for the marque, highlighting such significant moments as the production date of the automaker’s first car to its most important Formula-1 victories.
Enzo Ferrari Special Edition
Made of precious red resin, each Special Edition Pen – Fountain Pen, Rollerball and Ballpoint Pen – is inspired by the vibrant shade of “Rosso 70 Anni”, a red colour specially designed for the 70th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari, and which represents various iconic red tones over the years. The cone of the pen is engraved with two dates: one commemorating the birth of Enzo Ferrari and the other his first victory on a racetrack in 1923.
The Montblanc emblem that crowns the pen is in yellow resin, representing the city of Modena, Ferrari’s birthplace. It is embedded in a metal grid that recalls a vintage car grill. The ring on the cap top is engraved “OFFICINA MECCANICA ALFREDO FERRARI,” a reference to Ferrari’s father Alfredo’s workshop. And another engraving is on the clip, in Ferrari’s own words: “You cannot describe passion, you can only live it.”
You’ll also find the prancing horse logo located on the back of the pen’s cap – the famous emblem of Ferrari cars. A quote by Countess Paolina Biancoli accompanies the logo, as she was the one who gave Enzo the now-signature horse.
The handcrafted Au 585 solid gold nib is engraved with the image of a “Ferrari 250 GTO” steering wheel and one of Enzo’s nicknames – “Pilota”.
Limited Edition 1898
The cap and barrel of the Limited Edition 1898 are made from metal evoking the original “Ferrari 125 S” engine. This Limited Edition writing instrument pays homage to the meticulous construction skills of the Ferrari workshops. It features two dates engraved on the cone – one referencing the production date of his first car at Ferrari’s Maranello factory, and the other marking the date of the first racing victory for a Ferrari branded car. The ring on the cap top is embossed with the address of the Ferrari factory in Maranello, where Ferrari’s vision became reality.
The clip in metal is adorned with a famous quote by Enzo: “You cannot describe passion, you can only live it.” The fittings are refined with red lacquer – inspired by the very red of the first “Ferrari 125 S” car.
The Montblanc emblem in frosted glass, embedded in a metal grid, is designed to resemble the frozen windows on which Ferrari practiced his signature as a young boy, while he dreamed of being a race car driver one day.
The back of the cap shows the prancing horse, the famous emblem of Ferrari car. The handcrafted Au750 solid gold nib is engraved with the image of “Ferrari 250 GTO” steering wheel and a nickname given to Enzo Ferrari – “Il Commendatore”.
The Great Characters Enzo Ferrari Limited Edition1898 includes a Fountain Pen and a Rollerball, each limited to 1898 pieces, in honor of Ferrari’s birth year.
Limited Edition 98
Inspired by Enzo Ferrari’s incomparable achievements, this Enzo Ferrari Fountain Pen is limited to 98 pieces. This represent the 98 years since Ferrari was given the now iconic Prancing Horse logo, in 1923.
The cap and barrel of the Limited Edition 98 Fountain Pen are lacquered in “Rosso Corsa,” the official racing colour of Ferrari. The number 29 can be found on its cap in reference to the year Scuderia Ferrari was founded (1929), alongside an engraving of the brand’s logo with an Italian phrase: “Sono uno che ha sognato di essere Enzo Ferrari” (I am one who dreamt to be Enzo Ferrari).
Like the other two instruments, this model features two dates on its cone: 14/07/1951 refer to the very first F1 victory for the manufacturer, and 11/09/1988 for its double win at the Italian Grand Prix, just one month after Enzo Ferrari’s death. A slider in matte white gold on the barrel shows the dates of five historical Ferrari victories. Additionally, the shape of Ferrari’s racing cars is reflected in the design of the references clip, and the base is lacquered in Rosso Corsa coloring with six lines off to each side, representing a “Ferrari V12” engine. Four “air vents” on each side of the cap are also inspired by those on the bodywork of the 1952 “Ferrari 500 F2”. The barrel recalls that same engine, with a ruthenium-coated 18K gold allusion.
The 18K gold nib is engraved with the word “Drake”, another nickname for Ferrari, and the steering wheel of the “250 GTO”. The Edition is crowned by the Montblanc emblem in mountain crystal with Enzo Ferrari’s signature in the center, surrounded by intricate metalwork resembling a vintage car grill. The piece is finished with the “Fiorano test track” (built in 1972), printed on the front of the pen.
