The “Vitruvian Man” is created by Leonardo da Vinci in about 1490-1492 as an illustration for a book dedicated to the work of the Roman architect, Vitruvius Pollio.

The drawing in pen and ink on paper, depicts the figure of a naked man in two superimposed positions: With arms and legs spread apart – inscribed in a circle; with arms outstretched and legs brought together – inscribed in a square. It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the famed Roman architect.

This image provides a perfect example of Leonardo’s keen interest in proportion. It represents a cornerstone of Leonardo’s attempts to relate man to nature and illustrates what he believed to be a divine connection between the human form and the universe. He believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy for the workings of the universe.

The rediscovery of the mathematical proportions of the human body in the 15th century by da Vinci was one of the great achievements of the Italian Renaissance. There have been countless attempts over the years to understand the composition of Leonardo’s illustration of Vitruvius’ principles.

The drawing and its explanations sometimes called the Canon of Proportions are stored in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, Italy, and like most works on paper, is displayed only occasionally. Beloved for its beauty and symbolic power, it is one of the the most popular world icons.
