MONTBLANC Artisan Edition / James Watt

With this skeleton creation Montblanc honors James Watt, the man who revolutionised steam power and set in motion the modernisation of technology. The Limited Edition James Watt Skeleton Pen is a reference to his life.

The impact of Watt’s technological developments gave the process of industrialization, which was already underway, the critical momentum it needed to change the world. Almost every patent regarding the steam engine can be traced back to him. When Watt died 1819 at the age of 83, he enjoyed high regard as an international scale. Though he had never attended university, he was granted an honorary doctorate by the University of Glasgow and membership in the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The Montblanc Artisan Edition released two versions of the Limited Edition James Watt: the Limited Edition of 83 pieces and the Limited Edition of 35 pieces.

In tribute to his numerous patents and revolutionary inventions to do with water and steam, the Limited Edition 83 is embellished by several water-blue sapphires and the Limited Edition 35 is enhanced with diamonds, which crown the tip of the cone and symbolise bolts in the depiction of the beam and flywheel.

Limited Edition 83

The skeletonized 18K two-toned gold barrel and cap, with oversized flywheel motif, reflect the “parallel motion” linkage system of Watt’s revolutionary steam engine. The clip recalls Watt’s double-weighted centrifugal governor. The joints of the supports connecting the 18K gold flywheels are decorated with circular cut sapphires, and a domed mother-of-pearl Montblanc star surmounts the cap. The skeletonized body of the pen affords a glimpse of the 18K gold piston-filling mechanism within. Medium 18K gold nib is engraved with a horse, the symbol of horsepower.

Limited Edition 35

The Limited Edition 83 is a technical wonder in titanium, white gold and diamonds. The pen is all about James Watt – a key figure in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century. The skeleton overlay is a salute to his reinvention of the steam engine, while the equestrian engraving on the nib is a reminder that this was the man who invented the term “horse power”.
