Journey Among Dragons

The Montblanc Signs and Symbols, released annually since 2015, comprises two distinct lines: The Legend of Zodiacs and A Journey Among Dragons. The first one celebrates the zodiac sign of the year and the second one pays homage to mythical creatures and their powers. Both draw attention to Montblanc’s exquisite artistry in pen making, and each is a talisman in its own way.

Presenting the items from the Signs and Symbols collection, Montblanc turns for inspiration to myths and legends which have been remaining significant in the culture of the East and the whole world to this day.

Myths and legends depict the East Asian dragon in a multitude of figures illustrating its numerous traits and great powers. The mystical dragon god carries the attributes of different animals: the head of a camel, the eyes of a demon, the horns of a stag, the ears of a cow, the neck of a snake, tiger feet, eagle talons and the scaly body of a fish.

Over the centuries, a few dragons have crystallised out of these myths to become the most honoured among their kind. These are: the Earth Dragon (Dilong), the Heaven Dragon (Tianlong), the Water Dragon (Jiaolong), the Winged Dragon (Yinglong), the Blue Dragon (Qinglong) and the Yellow Dragon (Huanglong)

The white dragon in particular is among those honored as the dragon of spirit and purity. A water creature, that prefers moving water with a sand or gravel bed, and because water always finds balance, white dragons are among other things, symbols of justice.

Given its standing not only as one of the 12 zodiac symbols of the East Asian calendar, but also as one of the four direction or miracle animals, the dragon has a substantial influence on everyday occurrences in East Asian life.

From the “A Journey Among Dragons” the Water Dragon Limited Edition 88, dedicated to “Jiaolong”, the water dragon, god of aquatic animals and one of the oldest in East Asian mythology. According to legend, if Jiaolng navigates through water, his spirit is in full force, with the risk of mitigating his energy if he is deprived of his essential element, water.

The second in the series – the “Water Dragon” symbol is engraved on the 925 sterling silver cap. Coral-red, the lucky color in the oriental tradition, floods the lacquer that makes up the body, making it contrast with the champagne-colored gold fittings. The dragon’s guardian stone, amethyst, can be seen faceted on the cone of the pen.

A delicate engraving of an antique sword on the Au750 gold nib recalls the battle-loving “Ya Zi” – the second son of the nine sons of the dragon. The cap is crowned by the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl covered by sapphire glass.
