The Legend Of Zodiacs

The Montblanc Signs & Symbols, released annually since 2015, comprises two distinct lines: The Legend of Zodiacs and A Journey Among Dragons. The first one celebrates the zodiac sign of the year and the second one pays homage to mythical creatures and their powers. Both draw attention to Montblanc’s exquisite artistry in pen making, and each is a talisman in its own way.

Chinese New Year – sometimes called the Lunar New Year – has deep roots in Chinese history and mythology. Chinese Zodiac or Sheng Xiao is based on a twelve-year cycle, which is the time it takes Jupiter to travel around the sun. During the Han Dynasty (202 BC to 220 AD), each Chinese Zodiac year was paired to an animal that represents the qualities of the people born under that sign.

The animals themselves are organized by group of three per season and compass direction: Tiger, rabbit and dragon are associated with Spring and the East; snake, horse and sheep go with Summer ant the South; monkey, rooster and dog stand for Autumn and the West; while pig, rat and buffalo relate to Winter and the North.

The one born in the sign “Rooster” is considered to be a hero: the least understood, the most eccentric and the most intelligent. The Roosters are not disheveled, they walk around showing all their dignity; It is easy to fall in love with them and meanwhile difficult to forget them, since this sign is usually very attractive, especially for its personal elegance.

The rooster also represents the new dawn and fresh beginning by the crowing when the sun rises. Sometimes it is related with the Chinese FengHuang or Phoenix, because in addition to popular beliefs, there is the famous “Phoenix Rooster”, Onagadori.

The proud, colorful rooster found its way into early East Asian mythology as it was probably one of the first domesticated animal in the continent. It is the only bird among twelve zodiac animals and, as the sentinel of the sunrise, it is a powerful symbol of light and activity. There is a famous legend that a rooster is seen on a giant peach tree standing on Taodu Mountain, watching for daybreak and signaling all the other roosters of the world to join in. Rooster are also revered for their “five virtues”: high position, education, courage, community spirit and reliability.

Presenting the items from the Signs and Symbols collection, Montblanc turns for inspiration to myths and legends which have been remaining significant in the culture of the East and the whole world to this day.

According to a legend, Rooster is the second animal to cross the stream during a race among all the animals of the kingdom, organized by the Jade Emperor. The Rooster Piece continues the success of its predecessor, the Monkey Piece, with a hand-engraving of this animal that embodies self-confidence, courage and a hard-working nature.

The pen is created to reflect the modern influence of Eastern culture and comes with a 925 sterling silver cap and a contrasting black lacquer on the body symbolizing the “king of colors”, the most honored of all, according to the Asian cosmogony. The zodiac symbol is beautifully etched on the rhodium-coated Au750 solid gold nib, while the top ring of the cap is engraved with the year of the rooster 2017, as well as the previous six years of this sign. In addition, the pen comes emblazoned with a yellow citrine 0,2-carats on the cone (that is the birthstone of the animal) and represents the lucky number 8.

The number of pens in the edition is in recognition of the lucky number eight: 8 x 8 x 8 = 512 – the total.
