MONTBLANC Masterstück / Great Masters / James Purdey & Sons

Since 2010 The Great Masters, Meisterstück Collections are a series of Editions that pay tribute to both the paradigm of excellence of the Meisterstück as well as to the visionary traditions of other master craftsmen and to their long-standing dedication to excellence. In the Medieval Time, Great Masters and a number of assistants, students, and apprentices worked together in an Atelier, producing pieces of fine art released under the masters’ name. The master teached his young craftsmen to become masters themselves. The Montblanc maison is getting its inspiration from these classical crafts persons. Montblanc is collaborating with James Purdey & Sons, the highly exclusive Maison crafting fine guns and rifles for game hunting. It is an heirloom passed from one generation to the other. The crafts in wood carving & in metal engraving of the James Purdey Maison is unique, secret and extraordinary. You will find echoes and cues from a 200 years history in a James Purdey & Sons created object.

Montblanc has worked together with James Purdey and Sons for its latest editions, drawing on the expertise, artistry and heritage of the great British brand. Crafted from the finest materials with great attention to detail, the three new Montblanc Editions feature the world-renowned artisanal metal engraving and wood carving that make Purdey shotguns and rifles elaborate works of art, celebrated for their ornamental expertise.

Special Edition

The Special Edition Fountain pen and Rollerball resembling the deluxe Purdey hunting arms are crafted from the Turkish walnut wood that is meticulously treated, carved and finished by the artisans of Purdey. Hand selected for its straightness of grain, figure and colour, the precious wood is carved with a signature Purdey chequering pattern and decorated with a metal inlay featuring a rose and scroll design. The same design is etched on the fountain pens’ 18K ruthenium-coated nib, and the cone is embellished with an engraved ring. Evoking the brass plates used to personalize every Purdey piece, the brass metal plate on the side of the pen’s barrel is delicately engraved with the iconic Purdey starburst. An unmistakable seal of fine European craftsmanship, the Montblanc star emblem in mother-of-pearl and onyx crowns both the special edition fountain pen and rollerball.

Limited Edition 81

In 2018, the company first introduced a limited edition dedicated to the gunsmiths of James Purdey & Sons, but continued this edition with a redesign in 2020.

The limitation number of the Meisterstück Great Masters Limited Edition 81 marks the year 1881, when Purdey moved to Audley House in London’s Mayfair and where it is still situated to this day. This number also represents the age when James Purdy passed away, and the high-speed shotgun was developed by this visionary pioneer.

With a nod to gun design, the cap is secured with a safety and the clip is styled as a top lever. The white solid gold cap has been intricately engraved by hand with a Large Scroll pattern and enhanced with a solid yellow gold inlay of two flying red grouse, an iconic game bird. Blackening, a technique shared by both Montblanc and Purdey highlights the beauty of the metal engraving and adds depth to the elegant design. The gold material of the pen cover is in sharp contrast with the Caucasian walnut wood of the pen body, and it is designed with a chequered pattern and hand applied finishing.
