Issued every year since 1992 in a strictly limited edition, the Montblanc Writers Edition pays tribute to the greatest icons of literary history. Leo Tolstoy, the Russian master of realist fiction and author of epic works such as “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina”, is the latest figure of world literature to be honored with a limited edition inspired by his life and cultural legacy.
Tolstoy, Lev Nikolayevich, usually referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy.
Russian writer (1828-1910) who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. He received nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906 and for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902, and 1909. That he never won is a major controversy. Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828. Tolstoy is best known for the novels “War and Peace and Anna karenina”, often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy – Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth, and Sevastopol Sketches, based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. His fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas. He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays.
In the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his non-fiction work “A Confession”. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him to become a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as”The Kingdom of God is Within You”, had a profound impact on such pivotal 20th-century figures as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. He also became a dedicated advocate of Georgism, the economic philosophy of Henry George, which he incorporated into his writing, particularly “Resurrection”.
Limited Edition Leo Tolstoy
Yasnaya Polyana, the family home where Tolstoy was born and where he resided with his wife and children is the inspiration for the Limited Edition Leo Tolstoy. In this idyllic rural setting, Tolstoy adhered to his teachings of finding happiness in the simple life led by peasants, a theme reflected in the simplicity of the overall shape and design of the writing instrument. The characteristic pillars at the entrance of the Yasnaya Polyana estate are echoed in the shape of the top of the cap, which is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in black and white resin.
The dark grey precious resin cap, blue marbled resin cone and platinum plated fittings mirror the colors found on the covers of his first major works as well as the colors of the modest study in which he wrote his most important works. The ornament on the cap ring is inspired by a traditional woven Russian pattern that would have adorned the modest peasant smocks Tolstoy made for himself. The great author’s signature is engraved on the cap while the family’s aristocratic coat-of-arms is featuring the rhodium-plated 750 solid gold nib of the fountain pen, a subtle design detail that highlights his provenance and the value he placed on family.
Limited Edition 1868
For the first time, there appears next to the regular editions a more limited version, made in a Limited Edition of 1868 pieces, referring to the year his book “War and Peace” appeared. Tolstoy’s philosophy of working the land by hand is reflected in the hammered gold barrel. The cap has a fine guilloche pattern and is provided with a transparent beautiful blue lacquer. The bottom of the barrel and the piston knob are made of wood. The end of the barrel is accented with a malachite gemstone.
The colors chosen are consistent with the covers of his first major works and in the colors of his writing room. All fittings are gold plated, the motif on the pen is a traditional Russian pattern in which peasant smocks were often decorated. Tolstoy himself always wore a smock (which he often made himself) because he really wanted to live the life of a simple farmer.
In this Writer’s Edition, the signature of the author is engraved on the side of the cap. The 18K gold bi-color nib features an engraving of the portrait of Tolstoy. The fountain pen is equipped with a solid piston filler mechanism.
