With the Writers Edition, issued every year since 1992 in a strictly limited edition worldwide, Montblanc pays tribute to the lives and works of the greatest icons in literary history, writing literary history anew every year.
Honoré de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright. His magnum opus was a sequence of short stories and novels collectively entitled La Comédie humaine, which presents a panorama of French life in the years after the 1815 fall of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was born in Tours, France. After passing his initial law examination at la Sorbonne, Paris, he refused to become a lawyer – instead he pursued his great passion of becoming a writer. Balsac’s literary breakthrough didn’t take place, until after numerous unsuccessful publication attempts, he published the historical novel “Le dernier Chouan, ou la Bretagne en 1800” in 1829. In the years following this, Balzac wrote almost 100 novels and stories, which he collected under the title “La Comèdie humaine”. This impressive panorama of society revealed the passions and fates of over 2,000 characters from every level in France and was unique in its cope and its critical and realistic depth. “La Comèdie humaine” rose to become a masterpiecen of world literature, and its creator was regarded as one of France’s greatest authers.
An enthusiastic reader and independent thinker as a child, Balzac had trouble adapting to the teaching style of his grammar school. His willful nature caused trouble throughout his life and frustrated his ambitions to succeed in the world of business. When he finished school, Balzac was an apprentice in a law office, but he turned his back on the study of law after wearying of its inhumanity and banal routine. Before and during his career as a writer, he attempted to be a publisher, printer, businessman, critic, and politician; he failed in all of these efforts. La Comédie humaine reflects his real-life difficulties, and includes scenes from his own experience.
In its design the Limited Edition Honoré De Balzac recalls the stature and wardrobe of the great literary figure who always dressed in the luxurious style of a dandy. The cap of black precious resin and the dark grey lacquered barrel enhanced with fine lines pay tribute to Balzac’s cutaway coat. The platinum-plated clip with turquoise lacquer inlays copies his magnificently jewelled walking stick. Balzac’s pointed shoes are recalled in the shape of the cone while the skillfully and opulently decorated rings symbolise the French class society so masterfully described in “La Comèdie humaine”. The cap is crowned with the finely ingraved signature of the brilliant auther and, toghether with the engraving of his initials on the part rhodium-plated 750 solid gold nib, completes this fascinating Limited Edition Honoré De Balzac.
The Writers Edition 2013 pays tribute to the French novelist and playwright who contributed an opus of nearly 100 novels and plays to world literature of the 19th century – Honoré de Balzac. Inspired by the Dandyism of the 19th century and the elegance of Balzac, the precious black resin and gray lacquer of the barrel, with its guilloché refinement, makes reference to the typical cutaway of the trousers favored by refined Parisian gentlemen. While the oversized shape of the pen mirrors Balzacʼs bold stature, the clip, embellished with turquoise lacquering on its top, symbolizes the author’s walking cane. The platinum and gold-plated rings refer to the different classes that emerged in French society in the early 19th century – often a central theme in the works of Balzac. Furthermore Balzacʼs very own initials ‘HB” are finely lasered on the rhodium-plated Au750 gold nib.
