Arturo Toscanini (1867 – 1957) was perhaps the most influential conductor of the 20th century – his perfectionism and discipline were legendary. The cello student from Parma in Italy developed his fascination for the conductor’s baton at an early age, and was only 31 when he was appointed Musical Director of La Scala, Milan. Following engagements in New York, Vienna, Buenos Aires and Salzburg, Toscanini was finally elevated to the status of an icon of classical music in 1937: it was during his tenure as Director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra that he captivated the hearts of millions of American citizens who turned into their wireless sets every week to listen to him.
Fashioned from black precious resin with platinum-plated fittings, the “Arturo Toscanini” Donation Pen commemorates the life and work of the maestro: symbolising the strings of a cello, the clip recalls Toscanini’s musical debut. His signature and dates of birth and death are engraved in the ring of the cap. The rhodium-plated, finely engraved 18-carat gold nib sets off the “Arturo toscanini” Donation Pen to perfection. The edition is accompanied by an exclusive medal featuring a likeness of of the maestro based on a bas-relief portrait modelled by the Italian sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi.
