Chinese Lacquer

The Nobility of Authentic Chinese Lacquer

Chinese lacquer, a natural substance requiring special skills.

Of all the fine substances that decorate the S.T. Dupont products, one is particularly fascinating: Chinese Lacquer. Its origin is the sap of the tree, the Rhus vernicifera, found mainly in Asia. This sap is purified, delicately coloured, and then patiently applied by hand by master lacquerers.

Decors that are opulent and deep

Aesthetically speaking, Chinese lacquer cannot be compared with anything else. Its depth and its warm, shimmering hues, the ripples of the marble effect and the tortoise shell give each product a mysterious beauty and unique character. For no two lacquers are ever quite the same.

Resistance

Chinese lacquer is a substance which is almost wholly impervious to acids. Chinese lacquer also wears well when it comes to the knocks and abrasions of everyday use. Its resistance has long been known. Centuries ago it was used to coat the hulls of boats and Chinese armour. It also requires very little maintenance. Simply avoid any contact with “agressive” solvents and do not expose to strong light for too long a period, as this might affect to colour.

Immediate Recognition

We wanted to underline the truly exceptional character of Chinese lacquer by means of specific identification signs. These allow it to be recognized immediately, setting it apart from other contemporary lacquers. The presence of a symbol and an engraving certifies the authenticity of the lacquer.

  • A symbol, which is a stylized representation of the leaf of the lacquer tree, Rhus vernicifera, is set on the pen cap at 90° from the clip.
  • The words “Lacque de Chine” (Chinese lacquer) are engraved on the cap of the pen or bottom of the lighter.
  • A brochure giving information on Chinese lacquer, its origin, its history and the secrets of its preparation, along with a guarantee certificate, accompany the product in the accessory holder.
