The prize winners are presented with the Limited Edition Fountain Pens, bearing the name of a renowned patron of the arts. For 1994, the award is the Montblanc Louis XIV Limited Edition, each crafted from the finest vermeil (925 sterling silver plated with 23,5K gold).

Louis XIV: “the dieudonne” or “God’s gift to man” – The Sun King. He is a historically controversial figure, but he is also universally recognised for his appreciation of the fine arts. From the very moment of his birth, when he was baptized “Dieudonne ” (God’s gift to man), Louis XIV was destined to become one of the most fascinating personalities of all time. While he was known by many as overbearing and demanding, he also possessed an unrivaled passion for the arts. It is precisely these characteristics that made Louis XIV the greatest patron of the arts in his century.

Throughout his long and historic reign, the King founded numerous leading European cultural academies, took a personal interest in promising, talented artists and created an edifice that will always be associated with his name: the Palace of Versailles – remaining a considerable project still to this day, it will forever be linked with Louis XIV and the richness of his era.

The Montblanc Louis XIV is an impressive addition to the series of exclusive fountain pens created for the Montblanc de la Culture Foundation. Like all Montblanc Limited Edition, this writing instrument celebrates the accomplishments of distinguished figures in history. Each is a true masterpiece fashioned by master craftsmen.

With its delicate splendour and extravagant detail, the Patron of Art Edition Louis XIV recalls the interior decoration of the rooms and salons of Versailles, the court of the Sun King. The fine barrel made of vermeil – gold-plated 925 sterling silver – is twisted around with a delicate flower pattern, inspired by the world-famous gardens of Versailles. The hand-cut nib in 18-carat gold is captivating because of its carved heart-shaped hole and the delicately engraved bows, a typical fashion accessory in the court of the Sun King.
